Waveform Magazine Catwalk Cattenuator - DIY Build

As we tackled the Waveform Magazine Cattenuator, it was now time to tackle the new LPG/VCA. Like the previous build and the Mini Mult Catwalk, these modules take up about 12HP of space in your rack. Their footprint is small and their impact is huge. As previously stated, Waveform Magazine is on point with their Catwalk series. Project #5 - Catwalk LPG and VCA

Let’s get onto the builds shall we? Building the Catwalk VCA or the Catwalk LPG is relatively easy. The most difficult part of this build is assembling the vactrol or optocoupler as its sometimes called. An opto-isolator (also called an optocoupler, photocoupler, or optical isolator) is an electronic component that transfers electrical signals between two isolated circuits by using light. 

You will be putting together 2 of the optocouplers for this set of Catwalks, so turn on your iron and get ready to dive right in.

Issue #5 of Waveform Magazine is hot off the press and is steaming with all sorts of amazing modular goodness. With its reviews, interviews, industry news and modular kits, it is no wonder that so many modular enthusiasts look forward to each issue.

Since the magazines first release, we have been building the WF kits as soon as we get our hands on them. Here are the previous projects that Waveform has released and we have had the opportunity to build/review.

As with all of the previous builds, the quality and the ingenuity continues to get better and better. Waveform really threw everyone for a shocker with their “Catwalk” series from Issue #4, being that neither of the projects took up any space in ones rack (hence the name “catwalk”).

Issue #5 is no different and we are fortunate to have another x3 Catwalk modules (actually 4, the Catwalk Attenuator contains x2 of the same modules). With all that being said and done, let us get on with the builds so you too can see how cool these new Catwalk modules are! As the latest Waveform Magazine hit both the digital and home mailboxes, we were anxious to see the gang had come up with for their latest DIY module. We had the opportunity to build, review and share all of the previous Waveform Magazine projects in previous months and needless to say our curiosity was struck by the new packaging of Project 3 – The Switchenator.

As you can see in our Switchenator build photos, the header card/packaging of the module listed all 3 of the previous projects (PT2399 Delay, Gateway Oscillator and The Switchenator)… but the card had another listing. What could the Catwalk be? Was the Catwalk the notorious “Project 4”? Could this be a clue to the next module or DIY project this amazing magazine has developed? The simple answer is yes! Ladies and gentlemen, Waveform Magazine has presented us with Project 4 – The Catwalk.

When it was announced that there would be a magazine dedicated to modular synthesis, you can imagine the feedback from the modular community. Waveform Magazine was born in the summer of 2019 and upon its release it created a following.

To much of everyones surprise, not only was this a magazine that reviewed modules, manufacturers, artists, etc.. it also contained its very own DIY projects.

Project #1 was a upcycled karaoke reverb PCB that would be transformed into a eurorack delay. Otherwise known as the PT2399 Delay or Waveform Magazine Project #1, this little 5HP module inspired a whole new group of DIYers due to its new found glory of being published.

PT23.. what?

At the heart of Waveform Magazine Project #1 is the PT2399 chip. The PT2399 is a CMOS echo/delay processor developed by Princeton Technology Corp.

This digital chip includes an ADC (Analog to Digital converter), 44Kb of RAM to store the samples and a DAC (Digital to Analog converter). This chip was created as a simple solution to add delay/reverb/echo to karaokes and set-up entertainment systems. Pretty rad eh?

The PT2399 is readily available and has a minimum delay of 30ms and a maximum of 340ms (that could be extended up to 1 second at the expense of sound quality) which makes it perfect for delay, echo and reverb effects.
